The Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority working with the Council for British Archaeology recognised the need for a club to satisfy the inquisitive minds of Brecon’s young, between the age of 8 and 17.
It seems fitting that the Bannau Brycheiniog, an area steeped in history, will now have its own Young Archaeologists’ Club. Only recently, a large Roman fort complex was discovered near Brecon by aerial archaeologists. Although it will be feet firmly on the ground for our young explorers, there are undoubtedly more treasures waiting to be discovered in the area. There will also be a number of exciting activities and trips to look forward to.
The Bannau Brycheiniog Young Archaeologists’ Club will meet for the first time, appropriately, at the Brecknock Museum on Saturday 5th October between 2pm and 5pm. The afternoon will be packed with activities including, Making a Mummy Egyptian style, travelling back to Roman and Medieval times and getting your hands dirty excavating in a specially designed archaeologists dig box. There will also be a ‘washing line through time’ where our budding young archaeologists will get a chance to bring some order to historical events by pegging them up in the correct timeline.
Certain to provoke some fun and intrigue will be the mysterious feely boxes where our young explorers must try to guess the historical objects. Best of all the first meeting of the Bannau Brycheiniog Young Archaeologists’ Club, a drop in session, is free. Parents and guardians are welcome to come along and see what it’s all about. Budding archaeologists can also sign up to join on the day.
National Park Authority Heritage Officer, Natalie Ward, who is running the club said, “The Bannau Brycheiniog National Park has some incredible archaeology, and the Young Archaeologists’ Club will provide local children and young people with the opportunity to explore, be inspired and be excited by their heritage, and empower them to help shape its future, as well as the chance to have lots of fun.”

It’s exciting to think of unearthing an artefact that gives us a glimpse into the past, of a different way of life and a different world. It’s great that local children will now get the chance to do just that and more through the Bannau Brycheiniog Young Archaeologists’ Club. There is, without doubt, some hidden history yet to be discovered within the 520 square miles of our National Park.”
