Teams of up to four people are being sought to take part in the new Witches’ Pool Challenge – an eight mile walk set in stunning scenery that will test the competitors’ brains as well as their footwear.
The moderate to hard walk with a quiz tackles the picturesque Black Mountain landscape, with the route taking in Park Wood, Rhos Fawr and the beautiful Pwll-y-Wrach Falls.
Local legend has it that during medieval times the Pwll-y-Wrach Falls were used to judge local women who were thought to be witches – it is envisaged, however, that participants in this month’s challenge will enjoy a more pleasurable experience at this beautiful location.
On dropping back into Talgarth, those taking on the Witches’ Pool Challenge, no doubt a little weary from their travels, will be treated to free sausage and mash courtesy of the Tower Hotel. The deserving finishing walkers will also have the opportunity to try the new brew from Rotter’s Brewery – aptly named Witches Brew ‘the ale for scoundrels’.
The team answering the most questions correctly will be crowned the Witches’ Pool Challenge Winners 2012, and will each receive winning T-shirts sponsored by The Old Radnor Barn. The winning team will also be presented with the perpetual trophy sponsored by Lodge Farm, The Granary, Wye Local and Talgarth Regeneration Group.
Carol Williams, Tourism Growth Officer for Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority said: “The route taken through the Witches’ Pool Challenge is one of the walks promoted in the Walks around Talgarth guide – a selection of five walks for people of all abilities in the foothills of the Black Mountains.
“Locally, Crickhowell and Hay on Wye have their own Walking Festivals so, in partnership with locals groups and businesses, we wanted to create something that would really attract walkers to the Talgarth area too. This walk is another feather in the cap for this quaint market town in its bid to firmly establish itself as a top walking destination for people to come and enjoy the great outdoors.
“The Witches’ Pool Challenge takes in some truly breathtaking scenery, and although classed as a moderate to hard walk, it really is one of the most enjoyable walks in the area. We’ve already had a number of teams enter the contest, and we hope the en-route quiz will add a competitive element to the day.”
The Witches’ Pool Challenge is supported by Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority’s COLLABOR8 Interreg IVB NWE project, which is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund. This project aims to work with local businesses on initiatives that promote what’s local, distinctive and special about our National Park and help visitors discover the best of the local area.
