Popular River Usk footbridge replaced

The popular footbridge is located on the well used circular walk at the southern end of Christ College in Brecon, next to the River Usk.  Summer flood waters washed the old bridge away and with the kind permission and cooperation of the Dinas Estate, a new and safer location for the bridge was identified and the footpath was legally diverted to accommodate it.

With funding provided from the Welsh Assembly Government and the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) through the Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP) scheme, Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority Wardens and volunteers completed the final improvements last month.

Judith Harvey, Western Area Manager for the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority said:  “We have been working closely with the owners of the Dinas Estate and our volunteers to install the new bridge over a tributary of the River Usk. The old bridge was installed many years ago and was eventually washed away last summer after a particularly heavy bout of rainfall.

“The new bridge provides an important access route for the local communities of Brecon and Llanfaes and provides a starting point for longer walks to Abercynrig and Llanfrynach – so we are very pleased to have been able to work with Christ College and the Dinas Estate to offer an alternative route for walkers to enjoy.”
