Organised by the Parish of Cantref, ‘The Cantref Walk to Worship’ will be led by the Venerable Randolph Thomas, Archdeacon of Brecon, to commemorate the life and work of the hill farmers, Bannau Brycheiniog National Park’s 50th Anniversary, the National Trust, the Army, Brecon Mountain Rescue and the many visitors who love and visit the National Park.
The service is set to attract hundreds of visitors and walking enthusiasts from all over Wales, where it is hoped that the collection will raise much needed funds for Cantref Church, Brecon Mountain Rescue and the National Trust’s vital work towards maintaining footpaths.
Sue Brook, secretary of the Parochial Church Council said: “Cantref is a parish with a small number of residents that are mostly on scattered hill farms. But hundreds, maybe even thousands of people come here every year. There are the armed forces; volunteers who come out in all weathers for Mountain Rescue; others who maintain the paths and the landscape and those who just come to walk and to relax in the Beacons. We wanted to create an occasion where all the various groups whom we never really get a chance to meet could join together in worship and fellowship. We really appreciate the support that our neighbouring Parishes, Llanfrynach and Llanhamlach, are giving to make this event happen.”
Mrs Mary Taylor, Chairman for Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority said: “We are absolutely thrilled that this unique service is taking place on top of Pen y Fan and it’s appropriate since Bannau Brycheiniog National Park celebrates its 50th Anniversary of landscape designation this year.
“It’s a great opportunity to pay tribute to the perseverance and dedication of our rural communities who have helped shaped Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, believing all those years ago that this area was worth protecting for future generations.
“We would like to encourage everyone to put their walking shoes on the 28th July and help us celebrate this special occasion on top of Pen y Fan.
Hopefully, the service will be blessed with fine weather but walkers are reminded to take sufficient water, something to eat and to wear good shoes and appropriate clothing – bearing in mind it can be a lot colder and windier on the top of Pen y Fan than at the bottom!
